The late Mack Taunton, I. B. Barron and John W. (Bubber) Johnson, Jr. once had a dream to make home ownership easier for Valley area citizens. Messrs. Taunton, Barron and Johnson began a search and determined that the formation of a savings and loan association was the best answer.
On March 5, 1954, an organizational meeting of 75 investors was held and First Federal Savings and Loan Association officially opened for business on June 24, 1954, on the “square” in downtown Lanett, Alabama.
In March of 1956, First Federal moved its offices to West Point, Georgia, and changed its name to First Federal Savings and Loan Association of West Point, Georgia.
1999: Acquisition of Citizens National Bank located in Valley, Alabama; Changed name to CharterBank
2000: Purchased property for branch office in Auburn, Lee County, Alabama; Consolidated two Valley, Alabama branches into one (former Citizens National Bank Main Office); Received regulatory approval to establish a branch office in Auburn; Moved Auburn Loan Production Office into a temporary location at the Airport Plaza Shopping Center. This location also operated as a bank branch beginning January 1, 2001.; Formed service corporation and mortgage reinsurance company - Charter Holdings of Georgia and Charter Insurance.
2001: Reorganized into the mutual holding company form. The old CharterBank, formerly Charter Federal Savings and Loan Association, became First Charter MHC, the parent company for Charter Financial Corporation which is the parent of the new stock CharterBank.; Opened the new branch at the corner of East University and Glenn in Auburn, Alabama.
2003: Acquired Eagle Bancshares of Lee County, Alabama; Acquired South Davis Road property in LaGrange, Georgia; Acquired building on South College in Auburn, Alabama.
2008: Opened a cashless branch in Norcross, Georgia.
2009: Acquired Neighborhood Community Bank, from the FDIC, expanding our footprint into the Newnan, Georgia area.
2010: Acquired McIntosh Commercial Bank from the FDIC, expanding our footprint into the Carrollton, Georgia area.
2011: John W. (Bubber) Johnson, Jr. died.; Acquired First National Bank of Florida from the FDIC, expanding our footprint into the western Panhandle of Florida.
2013: CharterBank became a fully traded public company.
2015: Opened a temporary branch office in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, Georgia, moving to a permanent location in the Fall of 2016.
2016: Acquired Community Bank of the South, expanding our footprint into Cobb County, Georgia.
